Help Foster Your Teenager's Love of Photography

It is never too early to start thinking about the future, and if your teenager is showing an interest in photography, this may very well end up being the career path they choose.

This photography school is also an international school of photography for young people. Teenagers who are interested in photography can join the Teen Academy at the International Center of Photography. There are a number of excellent workshops that will teach your teenagers the basics of photography, and prepare them for further education should they be interested in learning more about this fun and exciting art form.

All of the Teen Academy programs are ten weeks in length, at a price of $700 each, or $675 for Center members, and are taught on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The programs offered at the Teen Academy are:

  • Photo I in B&W - This course teaches students the basics of black and white photography, with work being done in the 35 mm format. Students will learn about exposure, film processing and making prints, and will create their own portfolio of work. There are discussions, lectures, a field trip, and a visit by a professional photographer.

  • Photo II in Black and White: Envisioning Our Memories - In this program, students learn how photographers use images from the past to create lasting memories for the future. This program also involves a field trip, lectures, darkroom time, a guest visit and other study tools, and ends with a presentation for friends and family members. Students must have taken the Photo 1 in B&W program to be eligible for this course.

  • Photo I in Color - This course, just like the black and white course, involves the use of 35 mm film, and students are given plenty of darkroom time for their assignments. Students learn how to create color prints in the darkroom, and study involves classroom discussions, guest speakers, a field trip and photographic/writing assignments. Students will prepare a presentation for family and friends in order to complete the course, and are required to have taken the Photo I program.
